SavagexFenty: $hop or Flop

SavagexFenty by Rihanna was probably the most anticipated clothing launch of the summer. It was teased on social media as a lingerie line for women of all shapes and sizes. With Rihanna’s edgy style and sex appeal, women anxiously waited for this release. I purposely set my coins aside just to make sure I could purchase and review something. Unfortunately, upon logging on to the website I found myself struggling to find anything worth spending my dollars on. The launch isn’t a total loss, however.
Just like with Fenty Beauty, Rihanna took extra care in making sure women of all colors could find their “nude” shade. That is great because when shopping for nude intimates, darker women usually have to settle for black items. The basics are definitely the strongest part of the collection. The plus size unlined bras don’t resemble something fit for a grandma for once! There were rumors of accessories, like handcuffs, which is cute and unexpected. By the time it was my turn in line to shop the collection at 12:30am, the accessories were either sold out or omitted from the launch all together.
The lingerie designs for the SavagexFenty launch were disappointing. A lot of exxxxxxtra and sass was expected from Rih. The sexiness from all her music videos went missing for this collection. The pieces looked cheap. Most of us were expecting Agent Provocateur with an urban/Bajan twist. Instead we got Ali Express meets Fashion Nova at a borderline luxury price point. The plus size lingerie items were even worse. I get it, Rihanna isn’t plus size. She isn’t going to know what looks best on us. However, that isn’t an acceptable excuse. Either give the plus size designs the same attention the straight sizes got, or don’t do it at all.
Overall, I can’t justify spending upwards of $70 for a bra and panty set when I can join VIP at AdoreMe and get a quality set for $35.99 each month. I chose to pass this time around and wait for the next launch to see if it improves. At this point, even Torrid has started making intimates in various shades of nude. There really isn’t anything drawing me into this collection as a plus size woman. Furthermore, the best items in the launch only went up to a size 1X. Hopefully the next release is sometime soon. I also hope there are more and better options for the plus sizes. In the meantime, check out AdoreMe, Torrid, Hips and Curves, and AdditionElle for the best plus size intimates.
